The number of the online audience of the live Internet broadcast of this meeting was approximately 20,000. The united radiation scope of each venue covered all over the country. The latest knowledge, technology, achievement and future development of hernia and abdominal wall surgery were shared simultaneously.
It’s the first time for Chinese experts to participate in international guideline updating.
In China, the hernia and abdominal wall surgery has developed for over 20 years and become an important branch of surgery. The specialty discipline for hernia has been established in the field of general surgery.
The purpose of herniorrhaphy is to reconstruct abdominal wall defects, restore abdominal wall function, eliminate complications and improve the life quality of patients. It’s noteworthy that the surgical anatomy of hernia, the application of repair material and the selection of operation method have changed dramatically compared with a century ago. Therefore, following the guidelines and the surgical standards strictly becomes the guarantee for patients to get an optimal curative effect.
At this conference, the “Guidelines for Laparoscopic Treatment of Ventral and Incisional Abdominal Wall Hernias”, published for the first time in 2014 in the prestigious Journal “Surgical Endoscopy”, were updated. In recent years, due to the development and progress of minimally invasive surgery, laparoscopic incisional hernia repair has been widely spread and popularized in developed countries, but there are still many problems need to be solved during the practice. Moreover, new techniques (endoscopic intraabdominal wall surgery) for restoring the abdominal wall came up, which may avoid large skin incisions and bypass the abdominal cavity. So in this conference, under the leadership of Prof. Reinhard Bittner experts from all over the world discussed intensely about dozens of detailed questions about incisional hernias and primary abdominal hernias and aimed to reach a consensus for updating the Guidelines.
Laparoscopic incisional hernia repair has been practiced in China and the Asia-Pacific region for many years, but it is adopted only by main hospitals in big cities. This advanced technique is still not familiar to the doctors who work in primary hospitals, so it needs to be popularized by professional institutions and professionals. It is a proud fact that five Chinese experts of hernia surgery, Chen Jie, Tang Jianxiong, Ji Zhenling, Li Jianwen and Yao Qiyuan have participated in the development of the new guidelines, which is important for the further prosperity of our hernia and abdominal wall surgery, especially the endoscopic hernia surgery. At the same time, it indicates that our hernia surgery has been integrated into the family of international hernia surgery, and we have contributed to the development and progress of worldwide hernia surgery.
The setting of a milestone and the beginning of a new era for hernia and abdominal wall surgery
The conference followed the principles of Chinese Medical Doctor Association which are Service, Coordination, Self-Discipline, Protection of Rights, Supervision, and Management. The conference fully showed the achievements of combining Chinese Internet technology and clinical diagnosis and treatment technology together，which has developed rapidly. It had created a rigorous and normative platform of medical research and academic exchange for the vast hernia and abdominal surgery experts.
Attendees of this conference not only appreciated the elegance of international important hernia surgeons, watched standard hernia operations, discussed individualized treatment of complex ventral hernias, but also exchanged ideas with each other and interacted with leading experts face to face. As current theories and researches focus on hernia and abdominal wall surgery, domestic and foreign experts made academic exchanges by operation demonstrations, reports, professional lectures and oral presentations.
The standard operation demonstrations were broadcasted on web, which became another highlight of the conference. 23 hernia operations and 70 oral presentations (including both Chinese and English ones) were performed in this conference. The team of Professor Chen Jie from Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital performed 19 live surgeries and participated in all of 23 operations. With the assistance of Professor Chen Jie’s team, Wolfgang Reinpold, president of the German Hernia Society made the first show of the MILOS operation in China. Jan F. Kukleta, president of the Swiss Association for Hernia Surgery“ (SAHC), Professor David Chen, CFO of the American Hernia Society and director of the Lichtenstein Hernia Center, and Professor Li Jianwen, director-designate member of committee of CHCS performed normative operations of TAPP, Lichtenstein and TEP respectively. Significance of standard hernia surgeries and normalized operations to surgical outcomes were emphasized.
The lecture part of the conference was particularly wonderful. All speakers in the main venue delivered a speech in English on October 12th and 13th, and every speech led to a heated discussion, which showed a good academic atmosphere between Chinese and foreign experts. The main venue was divided into two parts: Chinese lectures and English lectures. The English lectures were more attractive. All seats in English Hall were filled up, and the audiences discussed fiercely. The young and middle-aged surgeons from different cities in China participated in it actively. They spoke in English calmly with no trace of timidity, even in the face of the international figures, putting forward sharp academic problems of the relevant topics and discussing them. They not only showed the progress of the overall English level of Chinese surgeons, but also gave full expression to the rapid development of Chinese hernia surgery. They did a preliminary work for Chinese hernia surgery to have a good place in the international academic field.
Due to the achievements of Chinese hernia and abdominal wall surgery, the International Endoscopic Hernia Society gave a highly evaluation to the development of hernia surgery in our country. The president of IEHS, Professor Bittner awarded the Department of Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery of Beijing Chao-Yang Hospital as the IEHS Training Center, which is one of the highest reputations we have got. This award will encourage us to make more contributions to Chinese hernia surgery. At the same time，IEHS awarded Professor Chen Jie, Professor Tang Jianxiong, Professor Li Jianwen, Professor Ji Zhenling, Professor Yao Qiyuan and former president of the Asia-Pacific Hernia Association, Professor Pradeep Chowbey as Honorary Member. Professor Shen Yingmo and other 30 domestic experts were elected as members of IEHS. The conference also set up Chinese Chapter of IEHS, which is the only international chapter. 50 Chinese outstanding hernia surgical experts were elected as the first members to the chapter. Professor Chen Jie was elected as the President. Professor Tang Jianxiong was awarded as the Honorary President. Professor Ji Zhenling was elected as the Secretary-General. Professor Li Jianwen was elected as the Education secretary. Professor Liu Ziwen was elected as the Academic secretary. Professor Shen Yingmo was elected as the Conference Secretary. Dr. Qin Changfu was elected as the International Coordinator.
In addition, the conference introduced a registration follow-up system, which had been established by our department in the past several months. This system is the only one in China up to now, and it fills the vacancy in the field of clinical follow-up in our country. Meanwhile, the conference introduced the operation procedure of this system in detail and clarified its great significance to the academic development and medical quality control of hernia and abdominal wall surgery in China. What’s more, the conference issued an English journal called International Journal of Abdominal Wall and Hernia Surgery, which was led by Professor Chen Jie and Professor Bittner and registered in Asia, Europe and Amerika. The kick-off meeting for the journal was held successfully. The first editorial committee of the journal was set up in the meeting, which covered both domestic and foreign experts. This is the only international journal of hernia surgery established by Chinese experts.
This conference promotes the communication and cooperation between domestic and foreign surgeons in hernia and abdominal wall surgery, and it will further promote the prosperity and development of this field in our country. We believe that, as an unprecedented and far-reaching academic feast, this conference will set a new milestone and begin a new era in the history of the hernia and abdominal wall surgery in China.
